Pan de Sieteo Sielo (‘Bread of Seven Heavens’) is a Spanish-Portugese custom that originated in the 8th century where Jewish woman would bake a symbolic challah with seven ropes of dough and special Jewish symbols for the Shavuot holiday. The custom was brought by the exiled Sephardic Jews and practiced by the Jewish women of Salonika, Greece and the Balkans for almost five centuries. The custom sadly died when the entire Jewish community of Salonika was deported in March of 1943 to concentration camps.
